Please join us on Tuesday, February 4th, between 5:00-6:30 P.M. at Meg O’Malley’s on the outside patio area.  This is, as always, a time dedicated to Irish culture and heritage.   This upcoming session will feature a presentation on the infamous “Irish Slave Trade” (The Forgotten “White” Slaves.  The Irish came by the hundreds of thousands as slaves to the Americas; a vast human cargo transported on tall British ships.  They included men, women, and even the youngest of children.  James I of England encouraged the sale and transportation of the Irish as slaves to the New World colonies as a method of reducing the Irish population.  Elizabeth I had previously carried out a reign of Genocide against the Irish people.  However, the English could not eliminate them all.  There were just too many of them.  James I (Elizabeth’s successor) decided to turn to an Irish Slave Trade as a method for reducing the population.  This practice was continued through the policies of Charles I and later by Oliver Cromwell.

During the Craic Session, Florida AOH State President Greg Seán Canning will discuss the background of events that lead up to this Slave Trade and how it effected Ireland and the Americas.

It is our hope that you will find this session quite informative.  His presentation will be based on the article, “The Irish Slave Trade”, which is posted on the aohflorida.org website under the “Irish and Irish-American History” subsection located under the Cultural Tab in the top Green Menu Bar.  Once there, the Article will be listed under “Irish History“.
